Causes
With regards to causes of Obesity there are five key factors that play a huge role in being diagnosed with Obesity.
Metabolism, Environment, Genetics, Behaviour, Socio-economic status.
Metabolism is something that is placed within the nerve centre for regulation of energy balance. This is called the Hypothalamus.
It receives many signals including neural, hormonal and nutrient messages from the body and gives off a higher signal of hunger.
Within Metabolism there are factors that increase food intake. These are noradrenaline, opioids, growth hormone, neuropeptide Y and cholecystokinin. There are also factors that decrease food intake such as Serotonin and Dopamine.
Genetics has recently been connected with Obesity due to its components within Obesity. These are familial clustering, high concordance of body composition and several gene defects responsible for obesity identified in rodents.
However it has been brought to attention that (Woolf-May, 2006) the genetic composition of the population does not change rapidly . Yet obesity has risen suddenly and grown by 400% in the last 25 years (HOC, 2004).
Environment also links in with genetics. The persistent role of genetic factors in human obesity is extremely complex- it is considered likely that there is interaction between several genes. These are susceptibility genes which interact with each other and with environmental factors. The genes gain fat and CVD, Diabetes.
Behaviour is another cause of Obesity. There are two different types of behaviour. Gluttony and Sloth. Gluttony consists of greed, increase in the diet would have increased, this increase can also affect energy balance mechanisms. Then we have sloth which relates too laziness, not doing enough physical activity and sedentary lifestyles.
